PHOTOS: UK court sentences Nigerian man to life imprisonment for k!lling ex-girlfriend

Published

A Nigerian man who m8rdered a woman he worked with after she ended their brief “controlling relationship” has been given a life sentence in the United Kingdom.

LIB reported that Adedapo Adegbola, 40, fatally st@bbed Stephanie Irons, 23, in the neck, at her home in Mapperley, Nottinghamshire, on the evening of 21 October, 2025.

Adegbola relocated to the UK in 2022.

Nottingham Crown Court heard Adegbola, a social worker, “had become obsessed” with Irons and planned to kill her.

On Thursday, February 5, 2026, Adegbola was told at the same court he would spend a minimum term of 25 years in prison following his guilty plea last month.

Speaking in court, Irons’s mother said: “I have no words to say how broken I am to have lost her in such a horrific way.

Adegbola sobbed as the mother described her daughter’s “compassionate and caring” nature.

“She lit up the room and could make even the saddest person smile,” she said.

“That’s because she wanted to make a happy and kinder world.”

Sentencing Adegbola Judge Nirmal Shant KC said: “You had been in a brief relationship with Stephanie Irons after you met as work colleagues.

“Your controlling behavior led her to end the relationship. What is plain is that you were not prepared to accept that.

The court heard Adegbola had purchased two knives and travelled by taxi to Irons’s home in Westdale Lane West, unknown to her, after they finished work on 21 October.

He arrived about 20 minutes later than her and after she appeared to take her bins out, he entered, leaving an hour and 50 minutes later.

Prosecuting, Peter Joyce KC told the court Adegbola had sent a number of screenshots of sexually explicit messages from Irons’s phone to colleagues “probably after he had k!lled [her]”.

Concerned for Irons, two colleagues visited her home in Mapperley but when there was no answer, they called the police.

Officers were eventually able to get into the flat through a rear window.

The court heard Irons was found lying on her back on the floor, surrounded by blood.

Joyce said: “It is the prosecution’s case that he has become obsessed with this woman and could or would not accept that the relationship was over.

Before Adebola m8rdered Irons, the court heard colleagues had become concerned by his behaviour towards her.

On 15 October, he purchased two knives “in order to k!ll” Irons.

Days later, he went to her home armed with a knife and inflicted a number of cuts to her as well as the fatal blow to the front of her neck.

The court heard after attacking her, Adegbola sat on the sofa “as she lay d3ad, or dying”

He then left taking with him her phone and her keys, locking her inside before fleeing and disposing of his shirt, trousers and the m8rder weapon on his way.

What you did on that day was to take the life of a young girl who was compassionate and accomplished and whose only fault was to love you at one time,” the judge said.

Adegbola handed himself into the police on 22 October, after feeling to Hull, and later pleaded guilty to murder in January.

Det Insp Stuart Barson, the senior investigating officer in the case, said Irons’s family had shown “incredible strength and bravery” throughout the investigation.

In a statement read out on the family’s behalf he said: “We have lost our beautiful daughter and shining light.

“No-one will ever take away the pain that’s been caused the this senseless act.

“She was the kindest, sweetest person anyone could meet and our lives will never be the same.

“She touched so many lives with her personality and kind soul.

“While justice will be done, time will never heal our loss.”

A number of police officers were in court on Thursday, at the request of Irons’s mother – a former officer – so she could thank them.

Bandits kill 29, abduct many in fresh attacks within 72hours

Published

on

Gunmen struck across states in the Northern region within the past 72 hours, killing scores and abducting many others.

The killings took place in a mosque in the Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State and a local community in the Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

There were reported abductions in Sokoto and Kwara states, in a renewed attack on communities in the North.

The hometown of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, Madagali Local Government Area, again came under attack on Tuesday night, with dozens reportedly killed, according to local sources.

Local sources put the casualty figure at no fewer than 24, though the police were yet to release an official figure.

The attack was the fourth on Madagali in five months.

The town was attacked on October 1, 2025; November 19, 2025; December 8, 2025; and most recently on February 24, 2026.

Mr Mohammed Yusuf, from Kirchinga — the governor’s village — told our correspondent in a telephone interview on Thursday that suspected Boko Haram insurgents invaded the village around midnight on Tuesday, killing several residents.

When contacted, the Adamawa State Police Command spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said authorities were still compiling casualty figures.

“I am still making contact to get the correct figure of the casualties; just give me a little time,” he said.

In Kebbi State, gunmen attacked a mosque in the Dadinkowa community, Maiyama Local Government Area, on Wednesday night, killing five worshippers and injuring several others.

Residents said the assailants stormed the mosque while prayers were ongoing and opened fire on the congregation, throwing the community into panic.

According to local sources, the attackers arrived heavily armed and went straight to the mosque, where they shot indiscriminately at worshippers.

Five persons were said to have died on the spot, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The injured victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the killing of five worshippers.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the state PPRO, Bashir Usman, said the incident occurred at about 8:30 pm during a nighttime Qur’anic Tafsir session coinciding with Taraweeh prayers.

According to him, the attackers stormed the mosque and opened fire on the congregation, killing five people and injuring three others.

“The attack was a reprisal by suspected terrorists. Five worshippers lost their lives, while three others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility,” the statement read.

Usman said police operatives, in collaboration with other security agencies, had been deployed to restore calm and commence investigations.

He assured residents that efforts were ongoing to track down the perpetrators and urged members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information.

There were also fresh abductions in Sokoto and Kwara states.

Suspected bandits attacked Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Tuesday night, whisking away several residents.

Local sources said the attackers stormed the town under the cover of darkness, firing sporadically to scare residents before moving from house to house.

The exact number of victims remained unclear, but families were seen searching for missing relatives as panic spread across the community.

The latest raid came barely a week after a similar attack in the same area, during which 16 people were abducted.

In that incident, the gunmen allegedly demanded a ransom of N20m and three motorcycles — a demand residents described as crippling and inhumane.

Rabah and other parts of Sokoto have in recent months witnessed recurring cases of banditry, kidnapping and extortion, worsening the humanitarian situation in vulnerable rural settlements.

Residents said the persistent attacks had disrupted farming activities and daily life, forcing many to sleep in fear or flee to safer locations.

Efforts to obtain an official response were unsuccessful as the spokesman for the Sokoto State Police Command, DSP Ahmed Rufa’i, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.

Similarly, the Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State experienced abductions in the early hours of Wednesday as suspected bandits kidnapped four members of the same family on their farmland.

The PUNCH gathered that the family had left home around 5 a.m. to begin the day’s work when armed men invaded the farm settlement on the outskirts of the town.

The attackers were said to have fired shots into the air, sending other farmers fleeing.

A community source said five family members were initially rounded up.

“They came suddenly and started shooting into the air. Everyone ran in different directions,” the source said.

“They first held five of them, but later released an elderly man. The remaining four were taken away to an unknown destination,” he added.

A female resident, who requested anonymity, confirmed the incident and described the atmosphere as tense.

“It is true that they abducted four family members. They were kidnapped on their farmland this morning,” she said.

“The elderly man was freed later, but the four others were taken away by the bandits.”

The Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Femi Yusuf, also confirmed the incident.

“How and why should any sane person go to a farm at 5 a.m.?” he queried.

“We all know the situation on the ground; no one needs to be told when it is safe to go about,” he added.

As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the victims had not been officially released, while the state police command had yet to issue a statement.

Worried by incessant attacks, youths from Kwara North stormed the Government House in Ilorin on Wednesday in protest.

Under the aegis of the Coalition of Kwara North Youths, they demanded an immediate end to killings and bandit attacks in Edu, Patigi and Kaiama LGAs.

Addressing journalists, the coordinator, Usman Haruna, said, “Our communities are bleeding, and silence in the face of repeated tragedy would amount to complicity.”

He alleged that recent attacks on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama LGA claimed between 162 and 200 lives within two days.

“These were not mere numbers; they were men, women and children whose absence has created permanent voids,” he said.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, meanwhile, called for the expansion of the Nigerian Army Aviation wing, describing it as a critical force multiplier in confronting evolving security challenges.

He said sustained funding and policy support were essential to maximising operational impact.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, also vowed justice for victims of recent attacks in Dorowa Babuje and Jong communities of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

Represented by his deputy, Ngo Piyo, he assured residents that perpetrators would face the full weight of the law.

Nine victims of a terror attack in Dorowa Babuje were on Tuesday laid to rest in a mass burial attended by grieving residents and community leaders.

Over 200 men wielding AK-47s stormed Yelwata – Police witness

Published

on

A prosecution witness on Thursday told the Federal High Court in Abuja that some disgruntled Fulani chiefs sponsored over 200 armed men wielding AK-47 rifles to carry out the June 13, 2025, attack on Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attack allegedly left more than 200 people dead and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.

The witness, Moses Paul, a team leader with the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force, testified in the trial of nine suspects charged in connection with the attack in Benue State.

The nine suspects accused of involvement in the deadly Yelwata attack pleaded not guilty on Monday, February 3, 2026, to 57 amended charges bordering on terrorism before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In count one of the charge, the defendants were accused of knowingly participating in meetings between May and June 2025 in Nasarawa State to plan an attack on Yelwata.

The prosecution alleged that the attack led to the burning of houses, grievous bodily harm, and the death of about 150 persons, contrary to Section 12(a) of the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022.

The 1st to 5th and 7th to 10th defendants were subsequently ordered remanded at the Kuje Correctional Facility pending trial.

Led in evidence by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, the witness alleged that the attackers were commissioned and funded by disgruntled Fulani chiefs who held meetings and pooled resources to execute the assault.

Paul told the court that he was in Apa, Benue State, when he received a distress call on the day of the incident and was immediately assigned to investigate the case.

“Upon arriving in Yelwata, our team commenced investigations which led to the arrest of the defendants in Kadarko, Ageregu, and parts of Nasarawa State,” he said.

According to him, the first defendant arrested was Haruna Abdullahi, apprehended in Ageregu, Nasarawa State.

During interrogation, Abdullahi allegedly confessed to attending meetings involving Fulani chiefs in Nasarawa.

The witness said the meetings were convened to address what was described as alleged unfair treatment of Fulani in Benue and Nasarawa, including the killing of their cattle and some of their kinsmen.

Paul further testified that the chiefs allegedly mobilised funds and engaged armed men to carry out the attack.

He added that the initial target was the Daudu community, but upon encountering resistance, the assailants diverted to Yelwata.

Earlier, the court declined an application by the first defendant’s counsel, Ibrahim Angulu, seeking to challenge jurisdiction and request bail.

The defence noted that Angulu suffered a stroke while in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, but Justice Joyce Abdulmalik declined the request.

The court adjourned the matter to February 27 for the continuation of the examination of the first prosecution witness.

PHOTOS: Troops thwart terrorist attacks in Borno and Yobe, k!ll 29 fighters

Published

on

Troops of the Nigerian Army have thwarted terrorist attacks across multiple fronts and neutralised 29 ISWAP/Boko Haram fighters in Borno and Yobe State.

Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI disclosed this in a statement on 22 February 2026.

According to the statement, troops of Sector 2 under Operation DESERT SANITY V neutralised 15 terrorists and destroyed a suspected logistics base during a precision operation around Lamusheri Village in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe state.

The early morning operation in Gujba, on February 22, 2026 followed weeks of intelligence gathering supported by satellite imagery and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance air platforms, which identified the location as a terrorist attack launch point and logistics hub.

Troops, alongside members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, came under fire while approaching the target but tactically outflanked the insurgents and cut off their escape routes.

During the ensuing firefight, 15 terrorists were neutralised, while several others escaped with suspected gunshot wounds.

In a related attack in Kukawa, Borno State, terrorists mounted on gun trucks, motorcycles, and on foot were repelled following heavy coordinated resistance and air support.

“Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have once again demonstrated clear combat superiority by decisively thwarted coordinated terrorist attacks in Limankara and Kukawa, Borno State,” the statement read.

“The failed assaults, launched on the night of 20 February 2026, clearly reflect the immense pressure being mounted on terrorist enclaves, logistics corridors, and leadership structures across the theatre.

“Through sustained offensive operations and targeted decapitation efforts, OPHK continues to deny terrorists freedom of action, forcing them into chaotic withdrawals under heavy losses.

“In expansion of the offensive pressure, troops of Sector 2 under Operation DESERT SANITY V, acting on weeks of intelligence backed by satellite imagery and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance( ISR) air platforms, conducted a precision operation in the early hours of 22 February 2026 around Lamusheri Village in Gujba LGA, identified as a key terrorist attack launch pad and logistics hub.

“Despite coming under fire on approach, troops, in synergy with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, outflanked the terrorists and cut off their withdrawal routes.

“During the ensuing firefight and exploitation, 15 terrorists were neutralised while scores fled with gunshot wounds.

“Extensive defensive and life-support structures were destroyed, five terrorist tricycles and two vehicles used for attacks and logistics were set ablaze with their contents, and a cache of arms, ammunition, bandoliers and carmel pouches recovered.

“Furthermore, in the same night, terrorists in unconfirmed numbers attempted to infiltrate the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Limankara. Alert troops immediately engaged the attackers in a fierce firefight, bringing disciplined firepower and tactical coordination to bear.

“Rapid reinforcement at the contact point with support from the Air Component Command overwhelmed the assailants, compelling them to flee in disarray through the burial ground axis.

“There were no casualties or equipment losses on the side of own troops while human intelligence confirmed several casualties on the part of the terrorists. The situation remains firmly under control.

“In a related incident , the same night, terrorists mounted on gun trucks and motorcycles, with additional fighters on foot, launched a coordinated multi-pronged attack on troops in Kukawa from the Alagarno and Jemmu axes.

“Anticipating such desperate attempts, troops mounted a determined defence, engaging the attackers in an intense firefight that extended into the early hours of 21 February 2026.

“Overpowered by superior fire and coordinated resistance from the ground troops and air support from the Air Component of OPHK, the terrorists withdrew dragging away casualties.

“The air platforms further conducted series of precision strikes, with one terrorist gun truck destroyed pulverizing four fighters in the gun truck.

“Persistent aerial surveillance subsequently tracked fleeing terrorists on five motorcycles to a convergence point, where another precision strike destroyed the five motorcycles and neutralised an additional 10 fighters.

“Following the strikes, troops conducted exploitation and recovered thirteen(13) AK-47 rifles, sixteen (16) AK-47 loaded magazines, three(3) handheld radios which the insurgents used for communication, terrorists stretchers used to convey their casualties, as well as shallow graves and blood trails left by the terrorists.

“Regrettably, one gallant soldier paid the supreme price, and some combat enablers were destroyed by rocket fire during the engagements.

“The wounded in action personnel were promptly evacuated by the Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters and are all in stable condition.

“These coordinated air and land operations significantly compounded enemy losses and reinforced OPHK’s operational dominance.

“The sustained and synchronised operations across multiple fronts underscore OPHK’s resolve to degrade terrorists combat capacity. The Military High Command commended the troops for their impressive battle performance and urged them to sustain the operational tempo.”
