ONE DAY, YOUR CHILD MAY ASK, “MUM, DAD, WHERE DO WE REALLY COME FROM?” WILL YOU HAVE AN ANSWER?

Published

on

Imagine your child growing up ashamed of their African name, unable to speak their mother tongue, knowing more about foreign celebrities than their own ancestors, and believing that everything foreign is superior to their own culture.

**What would hurt more than discovering that your child knows so much about the world but so little about their own roots?**

Parents, our responsibility goes beyond feeding our children, sending them to school, buying them expensive clothes, and securing their future. We must also teach them who they are, where they come from, and the history of the people whose blood runs through their veins.

Our children deserve to know the meaning of their names, the beauty of their native languages, the wisdom of their traditions, and the struggles and achievements of previous generations.

If we never tell them our stories, who will? If we never teach them our languages, who will preserve them? If we treat our own heritage as unimportant, what message are we sending to the next generation?

7 PRACTICAL WAYS PARENTS CAN PRESERVE THEIR CHILDREN’S CULTURAL IDENTITY

**1. Speak your native language at home.**

Make time every day to speak Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, or your own African language with your children. Teach them greetings, common expressions, proverbs, and the meanings of words. If they struggle, be patient and encourage them rather than making them feel embarrassed.

**2. Tell them the stories of their ancestors.**

Explain where your family comes from, the meaning of your family name, and the experiences of previous generations. Let your children know the people and sacrifices that helped shape their family.

**3. Teach them African history.**

Do not allow their entire understanding of African history to come from social media or outsiders. Introduce them to African kingdoms, inventors, writers, leaders, artists, and historical achievements, while teaching them honestly about the difficult chapters of our history too.

**4. Celebrate cultural traditions at home.**

Let your children experience traditional foods, music, clothing, festivals, dances, and family customs. Explain the meaning behind these traditions so that they understand more than just the outward appearance.

**5. Encourage relationships with grandparents and elders.**

Our older generations carry stories, wisdom, and knowledge that may never appear in textbooks. Encourage your children to speak with their grandparents and other elders, record family stories with permission, and ask questions about the past.

**6. Introduce them to books, films, and role models from Africa.**

Help your children discover African authors, filmmakers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and historical figures. Let them see that African people have contributed—and continue to contribute—to knowledge, creativity, science, and society.

**7. Lead by example.**

Children learn from what parents practise. If you constantly mock your own language, dismiss your traditions, or describe your culture as backward, your children may adopt the same attitude. Show them how to appreciate their heritage while remaining open-minded and respectful of other cultures.

OUR CHILDREN CAN BE MODERN WITHOUT FORGETTING THEIR ROOTS.

They can speak English, French, Dutch, and other languages. They can embrace technology, receive excellent education, travel the world, and build successful careers without feeling inferior because they are African.

Cultural pride does not mean rejecting other cultures. It means understanding your own identity while respecting the identities of others.

Parents, do not wait until your children become adults before you begin teaching them their heritage. **Start today—even one native-language conversation, one family story, or one lesson about your history can make a difference.**

One day, when we are no longer here to tell our stories, our children will either carry our heritage forward or struggle to rediscover what we failed to teach them.

**Let us not be the generation that provides everything for our children except a connection to their roots.**

Pope’s lung surgery successful – Vatican reveals

Published

on

Pope Leo XIV has successfully undergone surgery to remove a “small, localised nodule” from his lung.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Holy See Press Office, published on the Vatican website, on Tuesday evening.

The 71-year-old pontiff entered the hospital smiling and waving on Tuesday morning, hours before the operation to remove the growth, which was described as resembling a coin on the lung.

“The procedure was successfully completed, within the expected time and in the planned manner,” the Vatican said in a brief statement.

“The Holy Father has returned to his room,” it added, saying further details would be provided later.

The surgery was done at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital in Rome.

“Further information will follow,” the statement read.

Recall that Catholics around the world offered prayers and sent goodwill messages on Sunday following the announcement by Pope Leo XIV that he would undergo surgery during the week to remove a lung nodule.

Addressing Catholics gathered for the Angelus at the Vatican on Sunday, the Pope disclosed that his doctors had discovered a “localised nodule” in his lung and recommended surgery.

He said the nodule was detected at a very early stage and was well localised.

Following the discovery, he said his doctors had advised him to undergo surgery and that he had decided to follow their recommendation.

The Pope called for prayers ahead of the surgery.

He said, “Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localised nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well-localised.

“The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it.

“The operation is already scheduled to take place in the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.”

Catholic faithful, Christians and people of other faiths across different countries responded to the Pope’s call, with prayers and goodwill messages circulating on social media from Sunday till Tuesday that the surgery held.

The surgery marks Pope Leo’s first hospitalisation since he became head of the Catholic Church on May 8, 2025.

DEATH IS INEVITABLE — NONE OF US KNOWS WHEN OUR TIME WILL COME.

Published

on

One day, everything we are fighting for will become a memory. The money we struggle to make, the houses we build, the positions we hold, the titles we carry, and the pride we display will all be left behind.

Today, we are here. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

We argue over land, fight over money, hate one another because of differences, and sometimes destroy relationships over things that may not matter in the end.

But have we ever stopped to ask ourselves: What is the point of winning every argument if we lose our humanity along the way?

Death does not respect your wealth, your political position, your beauty, your fame, or your connections. It reminds us that, in the end, we are all human beings with limited time on this earth.

So, while you are still alive:
❤️ Love genuinely.
🤝 Forgive when you can.
🙏 Appreciate the people who care about you.
💚 Help someone who cannot repay you.
🕊️ Make peace instead of spreading hatred.
🌍 Leave a positive impact on the world.

Do not wait until someone is gone before you realise their value. Do not spend your entire life chasing wealth while forgetting to live. And never allow pride to stop you from apologising when you are wrong.

Remember: You may not control how long you live, but you can influence how you live and how people remember you.

Life is temporary. Kindness matters. Love matters. The way we treat others matters.

LIVE WELL. LOVE DEEPLY. DO GOOD WHILE YOU STILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY.

💬 QUESTION: If you knew that tomorrow was your last day on earth, what would you change about the way you live today?

Rapper Diddy hospitalised after head injury in prison — Report reveals

Published

on

American rapper and music mogul, Sean “Diddy” Combs, has reportedly been hospitalised after sustaining a head injury while serving his prison sentence in New Jersey, United States.

The 56-year-old was taken to a hospital on Saturday, October 10, and received treatment for what was described as a non-life-threatening injury, according to the Los Angeles Times, which reported the development on Monday.

The report, citing TMZ, said Combs was conscious and speaking before his hospitalisation.

Circumstances surrounding the injury have not been officially established publicly, PUNCH Online reports on Tuesday.

A representative for Combs told the Los Angeles Times in a statement, “We are aware of the reports concerning Sean Combs and are working to confirm the circumstances.

“Sean’s health and well-being are our immediate concern, and we appreciate everyone who has reached out.”

A spokesperson for the Federal Correctional Institution Fort Dix, where Combs is serving his sentence, did not comment on the reported hospitalisation, the newspaper said.

The development comes days after Combs’ reported prison privileges attracted renewed media attention, including allegations that he received special meals and massages and had access to prohibited devices.

In a report published on October 2, the Los Angeles Times said NBC News had cited four anonymous inmates who alleged that Combs paid fellow prisoners to cook and clean for him and obtained access to a contraband mobile phone and an illegal stash of alcohol.

Combs’ representative disputed the media attention surrounding his prison conditions, telling NBC News, “The continued scrutiny of every mundane detail of Sean Combs’s life in prison has reached the point where the media characterizes ordinary prison life as news.”

The representative added, “The only real news is that Sean continues to serve his sentence while awaiting the court’s decision on his appeal.”

The reports about his prison conditions were followed by a change to his projected release date.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the date was moved from January 21, 2028, to March 2, 2028, based on the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ inmate database.

Combs is serving a 50-month federal prison sentence after a jury convicted him in July 2025 on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

He was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges.

The verdict followed a high-profile trial in New York that featured testimony concerning sexual encounters involving Combs, his former girlfriend Casandra Ventura, also known as Cassie, and male sex workers.

Combs’ legal team has appealed his conviction and sentence. The appeal remained unresolved in the latest reports.

The reported hospitalisation adds another development to the legal and prison-related troubles facing the Bad Boy Records founder, whose career in music and business once made him one of the most prominent figures in American hip-hop.
