Tackle vandalism with innovation, NSCDC FCT urges officers

The Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, has called on newly trained personnel to take the fight against vandalism and infrastructure sabotage more seriously, urging them to apply the tactical skills acquired during their just-concluded training.

Speaking on Monday at the passing out ceremony of 174 personnel who participated in a joint tactical capacity-building programme with the Nigerian Army Headquarters Garrison, Odumosu challenged the officers to bring visible change to security operations in the Federal Capital Territory.

“I charge you to go forth as worthy ambassadors of this Command, embodying discipline, excellence, and tactical operational efficiency in winning the trust of Nigerians and bringing to an end, the menace of vandalism of public infrastructure such as the streetlights, manhole covers, crash barriers, armoured cables, power and communication installations and a host of other assets in the FCT,” he said.

The training, which was themed “Enhancing Tactical Efficiency Through Modern Security Tools,” was aimed at equipping NSCDC personnel with skills to handle contemporary security threats.

Odumosu stressed that the threats facing the country — from banditry and kidnapping to cyber intrusions and drone-enabled crimes — demand more than just traditional methods of policing.

“The theme of this training is both apt and timely. It speaks directly to the urgent realities of modern-day security challenges confronting our dear nation and the urgent need to combat them, head-on,” he said.

He added that modern challenges require not only commitment and courage but also the use of advanced tools and up-to-date tactical knowledge.

“The skills acquired through this training will translate into stronger surveillance capacity, quicker response times, and improved protection of assets vital to our economic and social well-being,” he noted.

Odumosu praised the discipline and dedication of the participants, noting that their completion of the course is a sign of their readiness for higher responsibilities.

“By successfully completing this programme, you have demonstrated your readiness to adapt to new challenges and embrace innovation in service delivery,” he said.

He also told the officers that their training should not stop with them, urging them to share the knowledge with colleagues across the command.

“You are now custodians of specialised knowledge, and it is expected that you apply it with professionalism, discipline, and a strong sense of duty. You must also serve as multipliers of knowledge, cascading the training to your colleagues so that we can strengthen the operational capability of the corps as a whole.”

The commandant expressed confidence that the training would yield practical results, including an increase in arrests of vandals and a reduction in infrastructure-related crimes across the territory.

“I assure you that this unique training would be a catalyst for drastic reductions in reported cases of vandalism, theft of public infrastructure, and a surge in the arrests of vandals and other criminal elements within the FCT and its environs,” he said.

While commending the Nigerian Army for its role in the training, Odumosu described the collaboration as a model of inter-agency cooperation.

He also thanked the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, for supporting the FCT command’s capacity development initiatives.

Just last month, the NSCDC FCT Command apprehended a truck suspected of transporting vandalised streetlight poles out of the city.

The vehicle, loaded with the items, was intercepted by the Command’s Critical National Assets and Infrastructure crack team during a routine 24-hour patrol around the Jabi area.

The truck, reportedly headed to Kano, was flagged down by officers, but the driver and his assistant fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. The suspicious contents were later confirmed to be vandalised infrastructure, prompting the command to impound and tow the truck for further investigation.

PHOTOS: Troops arrest two suspected ISWAP logistics suppliers in Borno, recover terrorists’ gate pass

Troops of Sector 3, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK)/Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), have arrested two suspected logistics suppliers to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during an intelligence-led operation in Monguno, Borno State.

Intelligence sources told security analyst Zagazola Makama that the suspects were apprehended at about 4:30 p.m. on August 3, 2026 at the C-19 checkpoint in Monguno following sustained surveillance and intensified operations aimed at disrupting terrorist logistics networks.

The suspects were identified as Bukar Kaka Modu, 30, and Abubakar Musa, 30.

According to the sources, the suspects allegedly confessed during preliminary interrogation that they were transporting food items and other supplies to ISWAP fighters in Kwatan Dowoshi Village in Kukawa Local Government Area.

Items recovered from them included 11 cartons of biscuits, 192 sachets of biscuits, one carton of Peak milk, 10 mudu of sugar, nine bars of Viva soap, six headlamps, two bags of garri, 16 rolls of sachet garri, three packs of lighters, two Tecno button phones, one assault knife, one jazz belt, four jazz beads, six packs of herbal medicine, and N6,600 cash, among other sundry items.

Security sources said troops also recovered an alleged ISWAP-issued gate pass, believed to have been used to facilitate access to terrorist-controlled locations.

The suspects and the recovered exhibits have been taken into custody at the Headquarters of Sector 3 for further investigation and necessary action.

The latest arrest is part of ongoing efforts by Operation HADIN KAI to dismantle ISWAP’s logistics and supply networks, which security authorities consider critical to sustaining the terrorist group’s operations in the Lake Chad region.

Five arrested for allegedly selling meat from de@d cattle in Borno

The Borno State Police Command has arrested five persons suspected of selling meat from d£ad cattle to members of the public in Maiduguri.

The suspects were arrested on July 29, 2026, by operatives of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit, also known as the Crack Squad, following intelligence reports on the alleged activity at the Old Maiduguri Cattle Market.

Police identified the suspects as Modu Umar, 43, Abba Mohammed, 24, Adam Abubakar, 21, Faruq Gambo, 19, and Mada Usman, 24.

According to the Command, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects allegedly obtained cattle that had di£d, cut up the carcasses and supplied the meat to roadside vendors for resale to unsuspecting consumers.

The police said the suspects were apprehended while allegedly transporting the carcass of a d£ad cow to the Morumti area of Maiduguri, where it was reportedly intended for further processing and distribution.

In a statement issued on Monday, August 3, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, said investigations were ongoing to determine the scale of the operation.

“The suspects are currently in police custody while discreet investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the activity, trace the intended distribution network, identify and apprehend other persons who may be connected with the alleged practice,” the statement said.

The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmajid, condemned the alleged sale of meat from dead animals, warning that such practices pose serious risks to public health.

He said the Command would continue to work with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to curb the sale of unwholesome meat and protect consumers across the state.

Police arrest six suspected cultists over attempted m8rder in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested six suspected members of the Alora Confraternity over an alleged attempted m8rder following a violent clash at a hotel in Ikere-Ekiti.

The suspects were arrested by operatives of the Command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS) after the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 1, 2026 at Inspiration Hotel, where members of the suspected cult group had reportedly gathered for a meeting.

Police said the meeting turned violent when members engaged one another in a fight, leaving one of them, identified only as “Sucrose,” with severe injuries.

The spokesperson for the command, SP Sunday Abutu, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday said that the RRS, working with surveillance operatives from the Ilupeju Division, swiftly moved to the scene and arrested six suspects identified as Owolabi Oluwapelumi, 28; David Adeleke, 28; Oluwatoba Alo, 30; Junior Olamilekan, 27; Segun Bidemi, 29 and Emmanuel Oladele, 27.

According to the statement, the suspects reportedly confessed during preliminary interrogation to being members of the alleged Alora Secret Cult Confraternity.

Items recovered from them included a Toyota Camry car, two face caps bearing the Alora logo, three plastic cups with the Alora logo, a blood-stained shirt, a pair of scissors, a yellow-coloured hand band and a key holder bearing the group’s insignia.

The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspects who fled the scene, adding that the management of Inspiration Hotel was also under investigation for allegedly allowing its premises to be used for suspected cult activities.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Michael Falade, directed that the investigation be intensified and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating cultism and other violent crimes.

He urged residents to continue providing credible and timely information to assist the police in tracking down fleeing suspects and other criminal elements, assuring that the command would sustain proactive measures to safeguard lives and property across the state.
