Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, on Wednesday represented President Bola Tinubu to inaugurate three major infrastructure projects in Lagos State.

It was reports that the projects inaugurated were the Ojora-Opebi Link Bridge, the Lagos Geographic Information Service building, and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administrative Complex.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said the projects were designed to improve mobility, land administration and public service delivery across the state.

In a statement, Sanwo-Olu described the Ojora-Opebi Link Bridge as a strategic intervention along one of the busiest transport corridors in Lagos.

He said the bridge was expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce travel time and improve the daily commuting experience of residents.

The governor said the LAGIS building would improve transparency and efficiency in land administration by ending reliance on manual and paper-based processes.

Sanwo-Olu said his administration remained committed to delivering projects that would positively impact residents before the end of its tenure.

The statement read, “With just over 400 days left in this administration, we remain focused on making every day count.

“Out of the 2,922 days Lagosians entrusted to us, we have spent more than 2,500 working to leave Lagos better than we met it.”

The governor also appreciated engineers, contractors and public servants involved in the execution of the projects.

He added that his administration would continue to prioritise initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of Lagos residents.

The Kano State Government has so far paid N32 billion of the N48 billion backlog of gratuity and death benefits it inherited from the former administration of Abdullahi Ganduje.

The state governor, Abba Yusuf, disclosed this on Wednesday while flagging off the payment of the sixth tranche of N5 billion gratuity and death benefits to retirees in the state.

“When we came in May 2023, we inherited a N48 bn backlog of gratuity and death benefits from the previous administration.

“Alhamdulilahi, today I am happy to say that N27 bn has been settled in five tranches.

“With the payment of sixth tranche of N5 billion, we have now paid N32 bn out of the N48 billion backlog of gratuity and death benefits,” he said.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to offset the remaining N16 billion before the end of the year to alleviate the sufferings of the retirees and their families.

“The settlement of these outstanding gratuities and death benefits not only alleviates the hardship faced by affected families but also reaffirms the administration’s promise to restore trust in government and uphold social justice,” he said.

He commended the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners for their patience and good leadership.

Some of the pensioners thanked Yusuf for his magnanimity and pledged to reciprocate the gesture by ensuring his success in 2027.

US orders staff to leave Nigeria embassy, lists 23 states as ‘Do Not Travel’

Published

on

The US Department of State has authorised non-emergency US government employees and their family members to leave the US Embassy in Abuja, citing a deteriorating security situation across Nigeria.

In an updated travel advisory issued on Wednesday, the department noted that, starting April 8, 2026, Americans are advised to reconsider travel to the country due to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.

The advisory classified the overall travel advisory for Nigeria as “Level 3: Reconsider Travel,” while some states are at “Level 4: Do Not Travel.”

The department also added Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba states to the list of “Do Not Travel” areas, bringing the total to 23 states where travel is strongly discouraged.

“On April 8, 2026, the Department of State authorized non-emergency U.S. government employees and U.S. government employee family members to leave U.S. Embassy Abuja due to the deteriorating security situation,” the advisory read.

“Reconsider travel to Nigeria due to crime, terrorism, unrest, kidnapping, and inconsistent availability of health care services. Some areas have increased risk,” it added.

Level 4 states that U.S. citizens are urged to avoid include, in the North, Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, and northern Adamawa states, due to terrorism, crime, and kidnapping.

The advisory also listed Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states, citing unrest, crime, and kidnapping.

“The security situation in these states is unstable and uncertain due to civil unrest. Widespread violence between communities and armed crime, including kidnapping and roadside banditry.

“Security operations to counter these threats may occur without warning,” the advisory said.

In Southern and Southeastern Nigeria, the department urged citizens to avoid Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers states (excluding Port Harcourt) due to crime, kidnapping, and unrest.

“Crime is widespread in Southern Nigeria. There is a high risk of kidnapping, violent protests, and armed gangs,” the advisory added.

The advisory noted that violent crimes, including armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom, are widespread and U.S. citizens are perceived as wealthy and are frequent targets.

It said terrorist attacks remain a threat across the country, including at markets, shopping centers, hotels, places of worship, and public gatherings.

It further described health services in Nigeria as limited and inconsistent, with medical facilities generally not meeting U.S. or European standards.

The State Department, however, urged U.S. citizens considering travel to Nigeria to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program for important updates, exercise caution while traveling, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, and establish personal safety and “proof of life” protocols.
