FG sets June 30 deadline to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa

Published

on

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians in South Africa that all citizens who have signified interest in returning home amid ongoing anti-migrant violence will be evacuated before June 30.

This is as the government warned that it may review options against South African businesses operating in Nigeria, including MTN, MultiChoice and Stanbic, as the situation has taken a particularly troubling dimension.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, by her Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Magnus Eze.

The minister said the Tinubu administration remained committed to the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad and would ensure that no citizen willing to return from South Africa was left behind.

She said, โ€œThe Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has assured that no Nigerian who has indicated interest in leaving South Africa would be left behind.

โ€œShe disclosed that so far, about 1,000 Nigerians have registered to be evacuated from South Africa before the June 30 deadline.

โ€œAccording to her, the first batch of 258 Nigerian nationals has already been airlifted by the Federal Government from the troubled nation.

โ€œThe Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb Sola Enikanolaiye, received the evacuees at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, on behalf of the Federal Government.โ€

Odumegwu-Ojukwu said President Bola Tinubu had directed that Nigerians exposed to danger and harassment in South Africa who voluntarily indicated interest in returning home should be assisted without delay.

โ€œWhen it comes to situations like this, of course, it is necessary to be temperate and exercise caution.

โ€œBut when your citizens are being harassed, when your citizens are people who have spent years there, and mind you, some of them are married to South Africans and have children who have known no other home but South Africa, then it becomes a serious concern,โ€ the minister said.

She lamented that the matter had degenerated to the extent that South African spouses of Nigerians and their children were also being asked to leave the country.

โ€œNow, under these circumstances, they are asking not just Nigerians, but also their South African spouses and their children, to leave South Africa,โ€ she said.

The minister expressed concern over what she described as the unequal treatment of Nigerians relative to the significant presence of South African businesses operating freely in Nigeria.

She specifically named MTN, MultiChoice, Stanbic and Protea as South African brands with a significant footprint in Nigeria, signalling that these businesses could face scrutiny if the situation was not addressed.

โ€œThere are over 120 South African companies operating in Nigeria. Nobody is asking them to provide proof of identity. Nobody is asking South African staff working there whether they are South Africans or Nigerians, and nobody is taking over their shops or businesses.

โ€œBut this is happening to Nigerians in South Africa. So, I think that at some point, we really have to review the options available to us.

โ€œWe have MTN, MultiChoice, Stanbic, Protea and many other South African brands spanning multiple sectors.

โ€œVigilante groups have reportedly been targeting migrants across several cities, looting their shops, breaking into their homes, and subjecting them to intimidation and humiliation.

โ€œMobs are also alleged to have killed some foreign nationals, while the police and other security agencies have been accused of doing little to protect migrants or prevent the attacks and calls for them to leave the country,โ€ the statement added.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also revealed that South African authorities had declined to activate a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Nigeria in October 2025, which established an early warning mechanism intended to protect the lives and property of citizens of both countries.

She said South Africa subsequently argued that those who signed the agreement on its behalf lacked the authority to make it binding and that additional procedures were required before it could take effect.

The minister said Nigeria was continuing to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels while exploring other lawful options, noting that any further action would be taken in line with constitutional provisions and due legislative process.

She described the anti-migrant attacks as deeply damaging to South Africaโ€™s continental standing, invoking the legacy of Nelson Mandela.

โ€œThe late Madiba, Nelson Mandela โ€” God rest his soul โ€” worked so hard to project South Africa as the bastion of pan-Africanism. And in one fell swoop, these anti-migrant vigilante groups have destroyed what this man sacrificed 28 years in prison for.

โ€œSouth Africa has been stained with the stigma of being a xenophobic country. This is not something I think they will be comfortable with in the long run,โ€ she said.

The minister further indicated that, as a law-abiding nation, any retaliatory measures against South Africaโ€™s anti-migrant actions would have to follow due legislative process.

She explained that the executive arm was actively engaging South African authorities through diplomatic channels and pursuing broader actions.

The minister said the National Assembly has a constitutional role to play in determining Nigeriaโ€™s response should diplomatic engagements fail to halt the attacks on Nigerians and their businesses.

State police will bring security closer to Nigerians โ€“ IGP

Published

on

Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, says state police will deepen community policing and improve intelligence gathering.

Disu told the News Agency of Nigeria in New York on Friday that the initiative would boost community-based policing and improve intelligence gathering.

He, however, said implementation would involve extensive consultations, comparative studies and capacity building before full operationalisation.

โ€œWe are still at the teething stage. We need experience, education and comparative studies from jurisdictions already practising state police,โ€ he said.

He expressed confidence that state police would strengthen collaboration between federal and state security institutions.

โ€œIt will bring policing closer to the people because officers will better understand the communities they serve. It will take us back to the era when almost everybody knew those policing their communities,โ€ he added.

The police chief said closer community engagement would improve intelligence gathering, public trust and rapid response to security threats.

He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Forceโ€™s commitment to innovation, professionalism and strategic partnerships to sustain peace, stability and national development.

The State Police Bill seeks to move policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List of the Constitution.

This would empower state governments to establish, fund and operate their own police forces alongside the Nigeria Police Force, which is centrally controlled by the Federal Government.

Disu, who participated in the UN Chiefs of Police Summit at the UN headquarters, said Nigeriaโ€™s sacrifices strengthen global peace.

According to him, Nigeriaโ€™s UN peacekeeping record remains a source of global pride, adding that the country has never failed in its UN peacekeeping missions.

The IGP said Nigeria remained one of the United Nationsโ€™ most dependable contributors to peacekeeping.

He praised Nigerian security personnel serving worldwide, saying Nigeria has contributed troops, police officers and made enormous sacrifices.

The police chief reaffirmed Nigeriaโ€™s longstanding commitment to United Nations peacekeeping operations across the world.

He recalled that Nigeria began participating in UN peacekeeping operations in Congo in 1960 and has remained a dependable contributor ever since.

โ€œThere is virtually no UN mission where you will not find Nigerian personnel serving with distinction,โ€ he said.

Disu said Nigeria had also made enormous sacrifices in global peacekeeping through the loss of many police personnel.

โ€œThe United Nations will never joke with Nigeriaโ€™s contributions because of our commitment and sacrifices,โ€ he said.

US-Canada $4.5bn Gordie Howe bridge to open after Trump dispute

Published

on

A long-awaited new bridge between Canada and the United States, threatened by President Donald Trump earlier this year, will open for public use in late July, officials said Friday.

โ€œToday, Canada and Michigan have agreed to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge on July 27, with the support of the United States Government,โ€ Canadaโ€™s Ministry of Infrastructure said in a statement, adding the bridge โ€ will be a vital economic link between Canada and the US โ€” generating billions of dollars in economic activity for decades to come.โ€

Gordie Howe bridge

The CAN$6.4 billion ($4.5 billion) bridge, which connects Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, has been under construction since 2018.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said last month the bridgeโ€™s inauguration had been delayed indefinitely at the request of the United States due to โ€œtechnical issues.โ€

In February, Trump threatened to fully block the bridge, insisting that the United States had been treated unfairly in its construction and that it should be โ€œat least halfโ€ US-owned.

Trump on Saturday congratulated and thanked the Canadian government.

โ€œI was able to cut a MUCH BETTER DEAL for America, and by so doing, will be allowing the new and spectacular Gordie Howe International Bridge, spanning Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to open on July 27th, as scheduled,โ€ he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

โ€œThe original deal made was unacceptable to me! The new deal is great, and fair.โ€

According to a fact sheet issued by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, the bridge was financed entirely by Canada and will be jointly owned by Canada and the US state of Michigan.
