Amaechi’s comments add another twist to the controversy over the outcome of the February 2023 election.

Rotimi Amaechi, a former Minister of Transportation, has alleged that Labour Party (LP) candidate Peter Obi won the 2023 presidential election in Rivers State.

Amaechi stated this while speaking during an X Space discussion on Saturday.

“I can agree with you to some extent that Obi won Rivers State.

“But I don’t know how the results were changed,” Amaechi said.

Amaechi’s comments add another twist to the controversy over the outcome of the February 2023 election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner.

INEC declared that the APC garnered 231,591 votes in Rivers State, while LP polled 175,071 votes.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, finished third with 88,468 votes.

By-election: Stakeholders sign peace accord in Kano

Published

on

Political party leaders in Kano State have signed a peace accord as part of measures to ensure peaceful and violence-free conduct during the upcoming by-election scheduled for Saturday, 16th August 2025.

According to a statement on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, the peace accord was signed during a stakeholders meeting held at the Command headquarters, Bompai on Tuesday.

“In preparation for the upcoming re-run election for Ghari/Tsanyawa State Constituency and Bye-election for Bagwai/Shanono State Constituency, scheduled to take place on Saturday, the 16th of August 2025, the Kano State Police Command convened a stakeholders meeting with the candidates and leaders of various political parties,  today, 12th August 2025.

“The meeting, which was held at the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Bompai Police Headquarters, Kano, was aimed at fostering peace, security, and adherence to electoral laws, both before and during the elections.

“During the meeting, a Peace Accord was signed by all parties in attendance, committing to a peaceful and violence-free conduct throughout the electoral process,” Haruna said.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, charged the stakeholders to adhere strictly to the terms of the peace accord and to carry out their campaigns and electoral activities within the ambit of the law, warning that any act of lawlessness or breach of peace would be met with swift and decisive action.

The commissioner assured the public of adequate security deployment during the elections to ensure a safe and secure environment for voters and political parties to participate actively in the process.

He urged all stakeholders to cooperate with security agencies to achieve a peaceful and successful election, adding that the command remains committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety and security of lives and properties in the state.

Kebbi ADC suspends chairman, key officials for misconduct

Published

on

The Kebbi State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has suspended members of its leadership over allegations of misconduct, financial mismanagement and poor leadership.

At a press briefing in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, the State Publicity Secretary, Jamilu Muhammad, announced the suspension of the party chairman, Sufiyanu Bala, Deputy Chairman, Junaidu Muhammed Mudi, and Secretary, Hawwa’u Muhammed.

He said the action followed extensive consultations with party stakeholders.

Muhammad accused the trio of diverting party funds for personal use, taking unilateral decisions without the State Working Committee’s consent, and failing to uphold transparency, accountability, and party unity.

“They have failed to position the ADC for political relevance in Kebbi State,” he alleged.

The party appointed Abdulrazaq Abubakar Isah Iko as Acting Chairman and Adamu Aliyu as Acting Secretary.

The party also warned the public against transacting any party business with the suspended officials and urged INEC and security agencies to clamp down on early political campaigns in breach of the Electoral Act.

Afenifere debunks endorsing coalition, says report is false

Published

on

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere, on Tuesday, debunked a report claiming that it had endorsed the Coalition movement spearheaded by a group of political parties in Nigeria.

This disclaimer followed an ongoing report within the political circle, as claimed by a group that visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his private residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at the weekend.

A statement by the national publicity secretary of the organisation, Jare Ajayi, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, declared that Afenifere had not sent any delegation to ex-President Obasanjo in recent times nor made any statement being credited to it.

PUNCH Online had reported that a coalition of opposition parties in Nigeria has adopted the African Democratic Congress as its platform for the 2027 general elections.

Ajayi maintained that the team that visited were those who played important roles in the attempt to make Peter Obi president during the 2023 presidential election race.

Afenifere said, “We are not denying the fact that at least two of the people in the delegation are notable Afenifere chieftains. They are Sola Ebiseni and Akin Osuntokun.

“But it is on record that Osuntokun was the person who took over as Campaign Director of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign Council when late Doyin Okupe resigned from that position.

“Ebiseni was the South-West Coordinator of the same council,” the organisation explained.

The national publicity secretary added that what further underscores the fact that the visit was not that of Afenifere was the presence of coordinators of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign Council who are not in Afenifere.

“They were John Ughulu and Folaseye Adabayo, Lagos State Coordinator and Secretary, respectively, of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign Council.

“The principal, Obi, has been reported to be in the ADC Coalition presently. It is therefore logical that his supporters would be justifying the coalition.

“Afenifere is not against any political group. But it is not in cahoots with any political party since it is non-partisan politically. Afenifere is for all the Yorubas. As we all know, not all Yoruba people are in politics.

“Even those who are in politics do not necessarily belong to the same political party. As such, Afenifere can not afford to be politically partisan.

“But since it has a political view, it can support a (socio-political) standpoint that aligns with its own position at any given time,” the statement stated

Ajayi explained that this is why the organisation continues to support the Federal Government’s efforts to restore and reposition the country in the overall interest of the Nigerian people.

“Talking about coalition or no-coalition is, therefore, a distraction that we cannot afford,” he concluded.
