Remembering the Eson N’Erie of Benin Kingdom and her Legacy

Early Life and Background

Oloi Esther Omoyenmwen Erediauwa (née Osunbor) was born in 1940 or 1941 (exact date not widely documented) in the Benin Kingdom, Edo State, Nigeria. Hailing from a distinguished family, she grew up immersed in the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Edo people, preparing her for a life deeply intertwined with the royal institution.

Marriage to Oba Erediauwa

Esther Omoyenmwen married Oba Erediauwa, who would later reign as the Oba of Benin from 1979 to 2016. Upon her marriage, she assumed the prestigious position of Eson N’Erie, traditionally the leader of the royal harem and senior wife of the Oba. In this role, she wielded considerable influence in palace affairs, ceremonial events, and the guidance of junior wives within the royal household.

Role and Influence in the Benin Kingdom

As Eson N’Erie, Oloi Esther Omoyenmwen Erediauwa played a multifaceted role:

Cultural Custodian: She upheld and promoted the rich customs and rituals of the Benin monarchy, particularly those involving women of the palace.

Palace Leadership: She was responsible for mentoring younger wives, managing the royal harem, and participating in key traditional ceremonies.

Public Representation: Her presence at festivals, coronations, and cultural events reflected the dignity and heritage of the Benin royal family.

Her coral bead regalia, traditional attire, and ceremonial accessories, often captured in photographs, remain iconic symbols of her high-ranking status within Edo royalty.

Later Life and Passing

Oloi Esther Omoyenmwen Erediauwa passed away on January 18, 2014, at the age of 73, after a lifetime of service to the palace and the people of the Benin Kingdom. Her death marked the end of an era in the royal harem, and she was mourned extensively both within the palace and among the broader Edo community.

Significance and Legacy

She was the first wife and senior wife of Oba Erediauwa, serving as a model of leadership and dignity within the palace.

Her life exemplified the central role of women in maintaining the social, cultural, and ceremonial structures of the Benin monarchy.

YOUR HUSBAND IS SITTING BESIDE YOU, BUT YOUR PHONE HAS YOUR FULL ATTENTION!

Published

on

Smartphones and social media are affecting communication in modern marriages. Are couples becoming too distracted by their phones to give their partners the attention they deserve?

When Your Phone Becomes More Important Than Your Partner

Imagine sitting beside your husband or wife, hoping to have a meaningful conversation, share a laugh, or simply enjoy each other’s company. Instead, your partner is completely absorbed in a smartphone, scrolling through social media, responding to messages, or watching videos.

You speak, but they barely listen. You ask a question, but their eyes remain fixed on the screen.

Sound familiar?

In today’s digital world, smartphones have become an important part of everyday life. They help us communicate, work, learn, and stay connected with friends and family. However, when phone use constantly interrupts time spent together, it can create tension and emotional distance in a marriage.

Are Couples Giving Their Phones Too Much Attention?

Social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp make it easy to spend hours online without noticing how quickly time passes.

Some couples may find themselves spending more time engaging with people online than talking to the person sitting beside them.

A husband may feel ignored when his wife repeatedly checks her phone during conversations. A wife may experience the same frustration when her husband prioritises football videos, online discussions, or messages over spending quality time with her.

This is not exclusively a women’s problem or a men’s problem. It is a challenge that can affect anyone who struggles to balance screen time with real-life relationships.

The Hidden Cost of Constant Phone Distractions

A healthy marriage requires communication, attention, understanding, and mutual respect.

When one partner repeatedly feels ignored, small frustrations can gradually develop into resentment. Important conversations may be postponed, misunderstandings may increase, and opportunities to share affection may be lost.

Of course, using a phone does not automatically mean someone is neglecting their marriage. People have work responsibilities, family commitments, and legitimate reasons to be online.

The concern arises when phone use becomes a persistent barrier to meaningful communication.

Being in the same room does not necessarily mean two people are emotionally connected.

How Can Couples Improve Their Connection?

Couples do not have to abandon smartphones to strengthen their relationships. Small changes can make a difference.

Create phone-free moments: Put devices aside during meals and meaningful conversations.

Listen to each other: Give your partner your attention when they are speaking.

Set healthy boundaries: Agree on times when social media and unnecessary notifications can wait.

Spend quality time together: Take a walk, share a meal, watch a film, or discuss your plans.

Speak honestly: If you feel ignored, explain how the behaviour affects you without turning the conversation into an attack.

The goal is not to control your partner’s phone use. It is to make sure both people feel valued, heard, and respected.

The Big Question: Is Your Phone Taking Over Your Marriage?

Technology has made it easier than ever to connect with people across the world. Yet couples must also make an effort to maintain the connections that matter most in their everyday lives.

A notification can wait. A video can be watched later. Sometimes, the most meaningful thing you can do is put your phone down and listen to the person beside you.

Ultimately, a strong marriage is not measured by how much time couples spend in the same room, but by the quality of the connection they build together.

NEWSBREAK365 ASKS: LET’S DEBATE!

If a husband is sitting beside his wife while she spends most of her free time on her phone, does he have a right to complain that she is ignoring him?

And should the same complaint apply when a husband gives his phone more attention than his wife?

Do smartphones bring couples closer together, or are they creating emotional distance in modern marriages?

WHY ARE MILLIONS OF AFRICANS LEAVING THE CONTINENT IN SEARCH OF GREENER PASTURES?

Published

on

Africa is blessed with natural resources, talented young people, rich cultures, and enormous potential. Yet, many Africans continue to look beyond their homeland for better opportunities, higher incomes, security, quality education, and a better standard of living.

But why?

🇳🇬 In Nigeria, for example, many young people dream of relocating abroad. Some are searching for better-paying jobs. Others want reliable electricity, improved healthcare, personal security, and an environment where hard work can translate into a better future.

Across Africa, people make difficult decisions to leave behind their parents, spouses, children, friends, and everything familiar to start again in foreign countries.

Some succeed. Others face discrimination, loneliness, language barriers, expensive housing, and the pressure of surviving in unfamiliar environments.

Yet, many continue to believe that life abroad offers opportunities they struggle to find at home.

HERE IS THE BIG QUESTION:

If African countries have valuable natural resources and millions of hardworking, educated, and ambitious citizens, why do so many people feel they must leave to achieve their dreams?

Is the problem unemployment? Low wages? Insecurity? Corruption? Poor public services? Or a combination of these challenges?

And let us ask another important question: If African countries provided decent jobs, reliable infrastructure, security, quality healthcare, and better living conditions, would so many people still want to leave?

Migration is not necessarily a sign of failure. People have the right to explore the world, pursue education, build careers, and seek better opportunities.

The real challenge is creating African societies where people can also build fulfilling lives without feeling that leaving home is their only path to success.

Africa’s future depends not only on its natural wealth but also on how effectively that wealth is transformed into opportunities for its people.

NEWSBREAK365 WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU!

👇 Answer honestly:

1. What is the biggest reason Africans are leaving their countries?

2. If you had a good job, a decent salary, security, and quality healthcare in Nigeria, would you still relocate abroad?

3. Do you believe Africa can create enough opportunities to convince more of its citizens to stay and build their future at home?
